I often receive problems like below in my email:
"I pressed the wrong button and formatted my camera memory card and lost all my photos for I taken, is it possible to restore those lost photos?"

"I accidentally deleted all the photos when I actually want to delete one in my phone. How can I recover deleted photos?"

So I decided to write an easy to follow guide to help people who deleted photos from mobile phone or camera and want to recover deleted photos, or lost photos due to accident format the smartphone, digital camera, or usb drive. Because the truth is that it IS possible to recover deleted photos, but not always.

Top 3 Reasons for Memory Card Data Loss

Possible to Restore Deleted Digital Pictures?

First of all, I'd like to introduce the common mistakes which may delete digital pictures from memory card.
1. Accidentally delete digital photos from memory card. This is the most common questions I received. It's quite easy to delete the wrong photo from digital cameras like Nikon, Canon or Olympus digital cameras, or mobile phones like Samsung Galaxy, iPhone, HTC android phone, Blackberry, or other cellphones. Even if you are careful enough, your friends, kids may just somehow press the wrong button which causes photos been deleted.

2. Format the memory card by mistake. This is also quite common, even happened to me before. During my trip to Australia, I took quite a lot of photos with my Canon , which caused memory card full, so I was browsing the photos and trying to delete those who does not look good, but then I don't know what happened, but I format the memory card and lost all photos.

3. Memory card corruption - Memory card error may happen any where, any time. Camera or cell phone may just show card error. They are many reasons for memory card corruption, including memory card disconnected while it's been used for reading or saving.

So for situations above, is it possible to recover lost photos?

SD Card Recovery Software

Solution to undelete digital pictures and photos from memory card

Memory CardFirst important thing after photos from SD card are deleted is to NOT save any more files to memory card. If you are using smart phones, android device, or digital camera, stop using the device, do not use it to take more photos. This is because that continue using the mobile phone or digital camera may causes new data to be saved, or files to be changed or reallocated, in all cases, it is possible that data be written to the space of deleted photos. Those overwritten raw data of photos will not be recoverable, with the missing raw data, memory card photo recovery could be a very difficult job.

Now I will explain a bit detail about what actually happens when files are deleted and how photo recovery process works. When photos are deleted from memory card, the actual raw data of photos are not really erased from memory card, this way the delete process will be very fast as no need to erase every bit of data. But what does system do to free up the space of deleted photos? In system card, there's a file table which record the physical location of each file, just like the table of content for a book. System will use the file table to easily get the physical location of the file. So to delete a photo, system will go to delete the file table entry of that photo. So now the photo's raw data is not accessible, and the space of those raw data are free for other files since no file is pointing to that address.

Now we know that the raw data of photos are not wiped from memory card. This makes memory card photo recovery possible. As it is possible to read all storage space of memory card, and then join all pieces together and form the file, just like doing a picture puzzle. As this process is very complicated, we need some tool to help us. The common solutions are data recovery service or memory card recovery program. Data Recovery service is a bit over as the price of data recovery is quite expensive, normally it costs thousands or tens of thousands. A good solution is to use memory card data recovery software. I will take Asoftech Photo Recovery as an example here as it helped me last time when I lost photos during my trip to Australia.

Steps to Recover Deleted Photos from Memory Card

Step by Step Guide to Recover digital pictures from formatted Memory Card

photo recovery softwareAs the entries in file table, which tells physical locations of photos raw data, are deleted when photos are deleted, system is not able to access those photos, we have to use some special tools to scan the whole storage space of memory card and then collect all pieces of raw data and then form them into photos, just like doing the picture puzzle. This special tool is memory card photo recovery software. To make the job easy, I list the step by step guide below

Step 1. Download and install Card Recovery Software from here

Step 2. Take out the memory card from camera or mobile phone, and connect SD card to PC with a card reader, or insert the memory card to card reader slot if there's any on your computer.

Step 3. Run card recovery software asoftech Photo Recovery, then in the program, select the memory card, then press "Sart" button to start scan for lost files.

Step 4. When scan completed, you will see list of photos, videos, music and other files that can be recovered. Select the items to get back, and press "Recover" to get back deleted files.

Congrats, mow you have recovered all deleted photos, it's not as difficult as you though, right?

I find this post about the memory card recovery. Accidental deletion of photos, images, videos leads to loss of the important files. If overwrite was not occurred, then all the files can be restored from memory card of the Samsung Galaxy, iPhone, HTC android phone, Blackberry phones. Here the recovery steps of the lost files from the memory card is really good to learn. See the SD card recovery solution.
